Zahari Stoyanov goes to arrest the traitor Grandpa Valyu ten years after the liberation of Bulgaria. At the place of death of Georgi Benkovski the old man denies his betrayal. Even those present do not know exactly who Benkovski was. That is why Zahari goes back ten years and describes the voivode, his characteristic manifestations. Gradually, his memory enters the last days of Benkovski: the first meeting with Grandpa Valyu and the treacherous trap. Zahari pities the traitor because he himself has a fresh memory of slavery.
